Surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) is known to be dramatically enhanced at the junctions between nanoparticles because of the formation of a “hot spot” for strong field enhancement. Such SERS-enhancing hot spot was designed by deliberate assembly of gold nanoparticles with an atomic force microscope cantilever. We investigated the change in SERS intensity as we varied the separation between the two gold nanoparticles placed in cyclohexane by the AFM tip. We also studied the dependence of the SERS intensity on the polarization axis of the nanoparticle pair.
