The electrical rectification property of a fullerene derivative, 1,4,11,15,30-pentakis(4-hydroxyphenyl)-2H-1,2,4,11,15,30-hexahydro-[60]fullerene, (4-HOC6H4)5HC60, is reported. The monolayer of this amphiphilic molecule on Au(111) substrate showed electrical rectification upto the tip bias voltage ± 2.0 V with rectification ratio ~ 11. Beyond this bias voltage, rectification ratio decreased steadily, until at ±2.5 V the current-voltage curve became symmetrical. In another set of experiments, the Au(111) substrate was modified by self-assembly of a number of thio-acids. On this modified substrate the fullerene derivative was either self-assembled, or the LB film of the derivative transferred. An improvement in the I-V characteristics measurement by CAFM was noticed in the bias voltage up to which rectification could be observed on the modified substrate. A comparative account of the I-V characteristics and the mechanism without and with substrate modification will be presented.
