In modern science and technology, there is extensive research interest in the synthesis of zeolites with secondary mesoporosity for the applications in catalysis and adsorption. In the present work, we demonstrate that hierarchical zeolite can be synthesized via the nanoscale pseudomorphic transformation of mesoporous gel into crystalline zeolite. We will demonstrate that the specially designed structure directing agent which induces the fast formation of silica-organic gel (i.e., ‘gelator’) can significantly reduce the silicate mobility during zeolite crystallization. The suppressed mobility of dissolved silicate allows the transformation of amorphous mesoporous gel into a crystalline mesoporous zeolite without the significant structural change in pore texture and morphology. Due to the enhanced molecular diffusion, the hierarchical BEA zeolite exhibited much enhanced catalyst lifetime than the conventional BEA zeolite in alkylation reaction of naphthalene. We believe that the results demonstrated in this work can give valuable insight into the crystallization mechanism of zeolites.
