Anionic species play an important role in chemistry and biology. The coordination chemistry of anions may be expected to yield a great variety of novel structures and properties of both chemical and biological significance. To this end, anion receptor molecules and binding subunits for anionic functional groups have to be devised. Positively charged or neutral electron deficient groups may serve as interaction sites for anion binding. Supramolecular systems which form +N-H…X- bonds have mainly been used. Neutral polar hydrogen bonds (e.g. with -NHCO- or -COOH functions), electron deficient centers (e.g. boron) or metal ion centers in complexes also interact with anions. As part of our ongoing research for the development of benzimidazole-based anion receptors, here we present the recognition properties of a new benzimidazole-based imine linked zinc complex.
