Various forms of diarylethene compounds undergo irreversible and fatigue-resistant photochromic reactions. They are regarded as a remarkably promising material for applications in optical devices. We studied the photochromic reaction of 1,2-bis(2,5-dimethyl-3-thienyl)perfluorocyclopentene (DMPT) by using stimulated Raman spectroscopy (SRS) that has the unique capability of tracking vibrational motions of a molecular system. For the two isomers of DMPT with an “open” and a “closed” ring configuration, the irradiation of the former with a UV light results in the latter through photocyclization reaction, whereas its reverse reaction is wrought by visible light. Photochromic reaction of DMPT was studied by SRS and quantum chemical calculations.
