A fluorination effect on surface characteristics and micro-structure of polyimide films

In this work, Kapton-H (pyromellitic dianhydride/oxydianiline), one of polyimide films, was modified by fluorination. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Fourier transform-IR (FT-IR) spectroscopic studies showed that the atomic fluorine in the process of fluorination is the main species affecting the surface chemistry. The changes in the surface region of polyimide were observed atomic force microscopy (AFM). Changes in wettability were evaluated by measuring a contact angle with a sessile drop method. From the results, it was found that fluorination of the polyimide surfaces induced the formation of fluorine functional groups and the rearrangement of imide groups in the polyimide substrate films. And AFM and sessile drop method indicated the surface roughness and the surface energy of polyimide films were much increased by fluorination. The improvement in the surface wettability was attributed to the high degree of cross-linking and large concentration of polar groups generated in the surface region of polyimide, after fluorination.
