Photosynthesis that takes place in green plants and algae is one of the most efficient light energy conversion processes. Therefore, there have been many attempts to mimic nature’s photosynthesis to directly convert light into electricity. In this work, we show our results of light conversion using thylakoid, a central unit in photosynthesis, rather than devising sophisticated structures. Thylakoid was extracted from spinach and fixed on the gold electrode already modified with thiol monolayer with amine terminal groups. Photocurrent was measured as a function of applied potential, the number of methylene units, and functional groups. Modified surfaces were characterized with various spectroscopic and surface techniques.
