In this work, platinum (Pt) and ruthenium (Ru) nanoparticles supported on carbon blacks (CBs) are prepared by chemical reduction of a metal precursor in an aqueou solution using HCHO as a reducing agents. The catalysts are characterized by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS). The crystallinity of catalysts was evaluated using X-ray diffraction (XRD). The electrochemical properties of the CBs-supported platinum and ruthenium (Pt/Ru CBs) catalysts were analyzed by cyclic voltammetry (CV) in 1.0 M CH3OH + 0.5 M H2SO4 aqueous solutions. The results from XPS analysis reveal that the catalysts contain mostly Pt(0) and Pt(Ⅳ) species. All the Pt/Ru CBs catalysts show the characteristic diffraction peaks of a face center cubic Pt structure. Consequently, the Pt and Ru particle size could be modified by heat treatment in fluorination, showing an effect on the enhanced activity of the Pt/Ru CBs for the methanol oxidation.
