Direct methanol fuel cells (DMFCs) are distinguished by their low operational temperature and convenient fuel feeding. These features permit a potential application to portable electronics. In this study, the potential of graphite nanofibers (GNFs) supported platinum (Pt) and ruthenium (Ru) catalysts as an electrode for fuel cell were investigated by studing the electrochemical oxidation of methanol. Various types of GNFs were used and the behavior of supported Pt and Ru particles were compared with catalysts were dispersed on carbon blacks (CBs). Catalysts were composed of Pt and Ru supported on two types of GNFs. The surface characteristics of the GNFs were determined by X-ray photoelectron (XPS), transmission electron micrograph (TEM) and inductively coupled plasma-emission spectrometry measurements. Electrochemical activities were investigated by cyclic voltammetry. As a result, it was found that the GNFs possessed the better electroactivity than conventional CBs.
