Development of analytical methods for synthetic tar color additives related to their specifications

Since the use of synthetic tar color additives in drugs and foods has been increased, the accurate and efficient analytical methods have been required. In this study, the efficient liquid chromatographic analytical method for simultaneous determination of several synthetic tar color additives has been developed through related chromatographic studies. For optimization of analytical conditions for reverse phase ion-pair HPLC, several C18 HPLC columns and HPLC conditions using mobile phases of ammonium acetate solution (containing n-tetrabutylammonium bromide) / acetonitrile/ methanol were applied. The examined colors were determined at 520nm for red samples, at 620nm for green samples and at 254nm for mixed samples. It takes 20-30 minutes for simultaneous analysis on several C18 columns and the detection limits of red colors were 0.002-0.01 μg/mL at UV 520nm and 0.005-0.1 μg/mL at UV 254nm, respectively. Also analytical methods for heavy metal specification of synthetic tar color additives have been developed and proposed using atomic spectroscopy and/or ICP spectroscopy.
