Chromatographic separation is a consecutive equilibrium process of analytes between the stationary and mobile phase. Martin predicted that the Gibbs free energy associated with the equilibrium is a sum of the contributions from the constituents of the molecules, i.e. for an oligomer, DP x repeating units and end-groups. It is known for long as the Martin’s rule to predict the retention behavior of polymers. The retention of oligomers, however, does not follow the Martin’s rule perfectly and the deviation becomes large for low DP oligomers. In this study, we found that the Martin’s rule worked near perfectly for oligomers if the unretained elution volume of a column is redefined(V*) by the retention data fitted to the Martin’s rule. The unretained elution volume has been typically defined as the elution volume of the injection solvent (Vo). There exists a systematic deviation between (V*)and (Vo),and we studied the origin of the deviation in NPLC and RPLC retention of polystyrene oligomers.
