Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are attractive supports in heterogeneous catalytic processes because of their properties that may be tailored to specific needs. Recently, methods have been developed for the anchoring of metal nanoparticles onto the surfaces or sidewalls of CNTs. Herein, a facile and efficient strategy to prepare CNT/bimetallic nanohybrids is reported. In the presence of thiol functionalized CNTs, bimetallic nanoparticles were in situ generated from respective metal salts through γ-irradiation. Bimetallic nanoparticles (Pt and Sn) were readily attached to the surface of CNTs, leading to the CNTs/Pt-Sn nanohybrids composite. The the CNTs/Pt-Sn nanohybrids were examined by HRTEM, electron diffraction and XRD analyses for the morphology, size and composition. The proposed method of preparing The CNTs/Pt-Sn nanohybrids exhibit suitability as an electocatalyst for the oxidation of methanol and hence is expected to find applications in fuel cells.
