Some organometallic compounds are very effective in the synthesis of high molecular weight PLA. Herein, the complexation reaction of N-[(6-methyl-2-pyridinyl)methyl]-(S)-1-phenylethylamine (MPMPEA) with ZnCl2 affords (MPMPEA)ZnCl2 and whose structure was determined by X-ray crystallography. X-ray crystal structure data reveals that Zn complex exhibits distorted tetrahedral geometry around the central metal ion. Interestingly, the coordination of ZnCl2 with MPMPEA induces a chiral center at amine-nitrogen in only (R)-configuration. (MPMPEA)ZnBz2, in situ prepared from the reaction between (MPMPEA)ZnCl2 and BzMgCl, was used as catalyst for ring-opening polymerization of rac-Lactide.
