CeO2 has attracted attention as a UV radiation blocking material as similar as TiO2 and ZnO. However, when CeO2 is employed as an UV screening additive for cosmetics, it becomes highly disadvantages due to its high catalytic activity against the oxidation of organic molecules. This study reports a soft solution route to CeO2 – layered silicate nanohybrid as a new inorganic UV absorber. Intercalation of CeO2 into 2D lattice of layered material may be effective for reducing the surface activity. In the present study, montmorillonite (MMT), which is one of aluminosilicate clay minerals, was employed as a host material for CeO2. The Ce-MMT nanohybrid was obtained through conventional ion exchange reaction between Na+ in MMT and Ce3+ or Ce4+ in aqueous solution. According to the powder XRD measurements, the basal spacing of MMT becomes larger upon intercalation of Ce ions. Especially, the MMT powder exchanged with Ce4+ showed excellent UV-shielding capacity and high reflectance in the visible light region without any post annealing treatment as compared to the pristine MMT.
