A novel strategy for DNA hybridization studies based on monitoring the photoluminescence of gold nanopaticles has been demonstrated. The optical properties of gold nanoparticles have been used to detect hybridization of specific DNA sequences in solution and on surface as an alternative to photoluminescence labeling of DNA. Observation of single nanopaticles from DNA may bring essential information for revealing the spatial distribution of the electric field near the particle. The electric field near the particle should be correlated to the plasma modes. In this communication, we present confocal spectroscopy and imaging of single gold particles bound with DNA. The results reveal characteristic features of plasmon modes in photoluminescence image and also enable us to obtain knowledge of electric distributions around the gold nanopaticle bound with DNA.
