Synthesis of Mesogenic d- and f- Transition Metal Complexes with Ferrocene-Containing β-Aminovinylketons

Heterometallic liquid crystals are of special interest because of possibility to combine optical, magnetic and electric properties of different metal ions in one mesogenic molecule. We have synthesized a new series of β-aminovinylketone ligands derived from acetyl ferrocene and 2- and 3-acetyl [3]ferrocenophane. Various d- and f-transition metal ions, namely Cu(II), Pd(II), Ni(II), VO(IV), Fe(III), La(III), Ce(III), Eu(III), Gd(III), and Dy(III) were were coordinated with the obtained ligands. According to polarization microscopy and DSC studies most of the obtained complexes exhibit nematic and smectic mesomorphism in wide temperature ranges. Close proximity of the metal centers potentially may lead to new interesting optical, electric and magnetic properties. Further investigations of these physical properties are forthcoming.
