Determination of lead and chromium in cellular phone using-XRF, SEM-EDX, LA-ICP-MS and GF-AAS

A screening procedures with several different analytical instruments were demonstrated to find a route to disassemble and disjoint a cellular phone, based on the PAS sampling document, prepared by HWG3, IEC 111. In this experiment, analytical tools used for screening are ED-XRF, SEM-EDX, and LA-ICP-MS. In addition, GF-AAS was used for quantification. The sample were disassembled or disjointed into 50 parts. ED-XRF for Pb and total Cr showed better sensitivity, compared with SEM-EDX that requires vacuum environment for the measurement. But due to high sensitivity, LA-ICP-MS showed the highest sensitivity with fast analysis even if ED-XRF or SEM-EDX detected Pb or total Cr barely. In addition, LA-ICP-MS also revealed very fine spatial resolution as well as depth profile. I meant that its targeting area was too small to represent whole sample, unless the raster mode was used.
