There has recently been considerable interest in the synthesis of new, high-activity palladium-based catalysts that can be used in low concentration in the Suzuki reaction since such catalysts have the potential to be used in industrial systems. Suzuki reactions are based on the coupling between aryl halides and arylboronic acids. The efficiency of Pd-catalyzed Suzuki reacions is largely dependent on the use of auxiliary ligands controlling the activity of palladium catalysts. We report here the synthesis of 4'-methylbiphenyl-2-carbonitrile by Suzuki coupling reaction employing silica supported palladium catalysts, in which palladium is immobilized on the surface of silica gel which is chemically modified and ligand-anchored. These immobilized palladium catalysts may be easily recovered by simple filtration and repeatedly reusable.
