Preparation of C18 modified monolithic silica particles of 3-5um size and their chromatographic separation performance

This work demonstrates the chromatographic separation performance of a monolithic column packed with C18 modified monolithic silica particles of 3-5 μm size. The reaction mixture of tetramethylorthosilicate, polyethylene glycol, and acetic acid was prepared in a vial and heated to form silica monolith. The monolith was powdered, washed with water, methanol, dried, and sieved to collect particles of 3-5μm size. These particles were modified with a C18 ligand, end-capped, and packed in a microcolumn. This column showed quite good separation efficiency (HETP as low as 8.5 μm) and it was even superior to the microcolumn packed with a commercial spherical 3 μm C18 stationary phase.
