Many useful drugs and drug candidates are hydrophobic, and thus making them into clinically useful formulations has been difficult. For any drug to be effective, it has to first dissolve in water for absorption into the body. The poorly water-soluble drugs present major formulation problems, and traditional approach has been formulation into non-aqueous, co-solvent systems. Other approaches include solid dispersions self-emulsifying systems, semi-solid formulations. Recent progresses in drug delivery technology allowed development of new approaches, such as nanocrystals, nano/micro particles, and polymer micelles. Currently, we are developing hydrotropic polymer micelles to develop universal delivery vehicles for poorly soluble drugs. Availability of a universal delivery vehicle for any hydrophobic drugs will significantly increase the success rate of new drug development, as more than half of the new drug candidates are abandoned due to their poor solubility. This presentation deals with recent development in universal delivery vehicles based on hydrotropic polymer micelles.
