Two-dimensional Patterns from ABC Star-Shaped Terpolymers -Archimedean Tilings and Quasicrystalline Structures

This lecture includes the recent advance in morphological studies on star-shaped terpolymers. This class of terpolymers of the ABC type are likely to form three-phase cylinder-like structure whose cross section exhibit periodic two-dimensional pattern. Actually terpolymers of the type, I1SXP2, composed of polyisoprene(I), polystyrene(S) and poly-2-vinylpyridine(P) show simple crystallographic Archimedean tilings of the type (6.6.6), (4.8.8), (4.6.12), depending on composition , and furthermore it exhibits somewhat more complex (3.3.4.3.4) tiling, whose triangle/square ratio is exactly 2. With changing composition a little bit more, we were succeeded in observing quasicrystalline tiling with dodecagonal symmetry whose elements are of the size of 50nm and triangle/square ratio is ca. 2.3.
