The design and synthesis of double helical polymers and oligomers with a controlled helix-sense has been attracting considerable interest in polymer and supramolecular chemistry. While a number of synthetic single helices have been reported, double helices are rare except for helicates and some oligoamides. In this lecture, I will report our recent work on the development of artificial double helices with a controlled helicity. The first optically active, artificial single-handed double helical oligomers consisting of complementary strands through amidinium–carboxylate salt bridge formation, m-terphenyl-based conjugate polymers bearing optically active amidine groups and achiral carboxylic acid groups and their complexation behavior in solution through the interstrand salt bridge to form a double helical polymer, and the double helix formation of oligoresorcinols in water and supramolecular control of its unwinding and rewinding using cyclodextrin/adamantine system will be presented.
