Cell membranes are very complex systems crowded with various macromolecules. There exists a great deal of structural heterogeneity in cell membranes, which was ignored in the conventional view of cell membranes, “fluid mosaic model”. The structural heterogeneity causes the anomalous behaviors of the protein diffusion in cell membranes including hopping motions and anomalous diffusion. Such anomalous behaviors affect reactions and physiological processes on cell membranes significantly. I will present a newly developed algorithm based on the spatial tessellation and percolation theory to investigate the anomalous behavior of the protein diffusion and compare the analysis to molecular simulations and previous experiments. The possible application of the newly developed algorithm will be also discussed.
