The pore size of the 2d-hexagonal p6mm, cubic Pn-3m and Ia-3d have been controlled in the range of 6.6-13.9, 5.13-6.68 and 2.4-10.7 nm, respectively, by adjusting either the synthesis temperature or the ionization degree of the surfactant. Mesoporous metal oxides Co3O4 were prepared via hard template synthesis by nanocasting method with these mesoporous silicas as templates. The pore size of the templating silica has been considered to be a key factor that determines the porous symmetry of the resulting metal oxides. The large pores facilitate the formation of single crystal mesoporous Co3O4 while the small pores often lead to corruption of meso-structure due to the insufficient crystallization of metal oxide within the small pores It has been found that mesoporous silica with the pore size larger than ca. 6 nm was favorable for the formation of Co3O4 replica.
