Previously, we reported a porous metal-organic framework [Zn4O(NTB)2]∙3DEF∙EtOH (1), which was prepared by heating the mixture of Zn(NO3)2 and H3NTB (H3NTB = 4,4’,4’’-nitrilotrisbenzoic acid) in DEF/EtOH/H2O at 110℃ for 24 h. Recently, we found that if the reaction time is extended, small amount (ca. 1 %) of crystals in the different shape from 1 were formed as another product. In the same reaction conditions as the synthesis of 1, the addition of diethylamine hydrochloride yielded this new compound [H2NEt2][Zn3(HCOO)(NTB)2] (2) selectively, which is an anionic 3D porous metal-organic framework with [H2NEt2]+ cations enclosed in the cavities. Diethylamine hydrochloride possibly shifts the reaction equilibrium by providing [H2NEt2]+ counter ions as well as generating formate bridges connecting Zn3 clusters by the hydrolysis of DEF molecules.
