Department of Engineering in Energy & Applied Chemistry, Silla University, Busan 617-736, Republic of Korea Helical carbon coils were regarded to have promising materials characteristics because of their unique geometry [1-3]. Basically, helically coiled carbon nanotubes were known to be constructed by periodically inserting heptagonal and pentagonal rings into hexagonal network [4]. The electronic structure of helically coiled carbon nanotubes can be metallic, semiconducting or semi-metallic depending on the placement of the pentagonal and heptagonal rings [5]. Helical carbon coils are also predicted to have a potential application as fillers for nano-composites because their coil morphology would make them better anchored in embedding matrix and consequently favor a better load transfer to the matrix [6]. Carbon coils have been occasionally found as low-content by-products during multiwalled carbon nanotubes formation reaction and their morphologies were observed as randomly-shaped geometry at as-grown state [7, 8]. So, it would give rise to unpredictable electrical and/or mechanical characteristics. For the practical application of carbon coils, therefore, the synthesis of carbon coils having the controlled-characteristics result from the controlled coil morphology and geometry (diameter, pitch, length, and turning direction) would be indispensible. For the synthesis techniques of carbon coils, thermal chemical vapor deposition (TCVD) technique using the metal catalyst has been more noticed because of its relative inexpensive and applicable feature. For the metal catalyst used in TCVD, iron family (Fe, Co, Ni), especially Ni, were known as an effective catalyst for the formation of carbon coils. The characteristics of the used metal catalyst would be the important factor to control the geometry of carbon coils besides the system parameters for TCVD, such as substrate temperature, gas flow rate, and total pressure. This work introduces the method to control the geometry of carbon coils by altering the characteristics of nickel catalyst layer. To do this, hydrogen plasma pretreatment process was introduced prior to carbon coils synthesis reaction process. By hydrogen plasma pretreatment prior to carbon coils synthesis reaction, the dominant formation of nano-sized wave-like geometry of carbon coils could be achieved. The characteristics (formation density, morphology, and geometry) of as-grown carbon coils with or without hydrogen plasma pretreatment process were investigated. The cause for the control of carbon coils geometries from various types to nano-sized wave-like type by hydrogen plasma pretreatment process was discussed in association with hydrogen plasma’s ability to etch nickel catalyst layer.
