Hydrothermal carbonization has been used to transform biomass to biochar. In this study, hydrothermal carbonization of food waste feedstock was performed in a tubular reactor at 220 oC for 30 min, 1 hr, 1.5 hr, and 2 hr to optimize the biochar production. The food waste feedstock was artificially made of cabbage, apple, the cooked rice, and fish, which contained the moisture content about 78%. The yield of biochar production was decreased as the reaction time was increased. Even though the yield of biochar produced at 30 min was the greatest, the reaction time of 30 min for biochar production was excluded because the time was not sufficient to convert feedstock to the desirable biochar. To compare the surface areas, the iodine numbers of the biochars were determined. The iodine numbers that are closely related to the surface area were 521 mg/g for biochar at 1 hr, 526 mg/g for biochar at 2 hr while 635 mg/g for the commercial activated carbon. BET analyses were performed to correlate the surface areas with the iodine numbers. Boehm titration was performed to investigate the acidic and basic sites of biochars for their activity with other substances. In addition, FT-IR was taken to characterize the surface functional groups.
