The dietary intake of polychlorinated biphenyls has been estimated using the sum of 62 PCB congeners (∑62PCBs) including 7 indicator PCBs and 12 dioxin-like PCBs in the South Korean general population. In this study, 200 individual food samples belonging to 40 different foodstuffs were investigated for estimation of PCBs congener distribution at five sampling cities. PCBs exposure was estimated using Korean dietary habits based on NHANES. The PCBs concentration of rice, which is the most frequently consumed in Korea, was 0.903 ng/g ww and its level was relatively low in whole food samples. The mean PCBs level of fishes was 4.447 ng/g ww, which was the highest recorded, but relatively small amount of that consumed by general population. That’s to say that dietary daily intake also should be considered significantly for human exposure to PCBs, not to mention consumption of contaminated foods. Dioxin-like PCBs level was also calculated using TEF values established in 2005. The average levels (pg TEQ/g) were 0.0002 for rice and 0.0098 for fishes, respectively. The dioxin-like PCBs accounted for relatively small percentage compared to many other previous studies. According to our research, it could be estimated of health risks associated with exposure to PCBs using the tolerable daily intake (TDI) to general population.
